dc.description.abstractA presente pesquisa investiga a representação de São Sebastião, mártir da igreja católica, que a partir do período Moderno se torna explicitamente parte da iconografia homoerótica presente até o momento na arte contemporânea. A pesquisa busca entender como São Sebastião se tornou um ícone e patrono não-oficial da comunidade gay. Partindo da ideia de que a representação do mártir durante o Renascimento já continha implicitamente um apelo erótico, vendo que certas escolhas estéticas na imagem do santo tendem a uma erotização do corpo jovem masculino, a expressão de prazer na inflição de dor e restrição física e uma aparência andrógina de São Sebastião. Assim, teríamos uma apropriação mútua do homoerotismo pela igreja católica e uma apropriação de artistas gays de um santo? Esta iconografia ainda se repete na obra de vários artistas brasileiros contemporâneos. Pretende-se fazer um levantamento de diferentes artistas que se apropriaram da imagem de São Sebastião – já fora de um contexto artístico exclusivamente cristão.
dc.description.resumoThis research investigates the representation of Saint Sebastian, a martyr of the Catholic Church, that in the Modern period, became an explicit part of the homoerotic iconography present in contemporary art to this day. The research seeks to understand how Saint Sebastian turns into an icon and unofficial patron of the gay community. Starting from the idea that the representation of the martyr, during the Renaissance, already contained an implicit erotic appeal, understanding that certain aesthetic choices in the image of the saint tends towards an eroticization of the young male body, the expression of pleasure in the infliction of pain and physical restraint, and an androgynous appearance of Saint Sebastian. So, would we have a mutual appropriation of homoeroticism by the Catholic Church and an appropriation of a saint by gay artists? This iconography is still visible in the work of several contemporary Brazilian artists. This research intends to, also, explore different artists who have appropriated the image of Saint Sebastian – although outside of an exclusively Christian artistic context.
